WEEKEND READ
Hey there,
You’ve probably already heard of neuro-linguistic programming, or NLP, which is an approach to personal development and communication.
But can you give any concrete examples of NLP in action?
Anchors away!
One of the tenets of NLP is that your mind is very good at creating links, or anchors, to important life moments.
For instance, a certain smell, such as the scent of a loved one, can trigger happy memories – of your first kiss, for example, or of your mother’s embrace.
If you want to adjust your mood, you can create new, positive anchors with NLP’s three-step technique:
First, think of the emotional state you want to be in. Whether it’s happy, energetic or calm, pick your ideal state and keep it in mind.
Next, think of a time when you were in this state, like when you passed an important exam at school.
Third, think of a sound or movement that you want to associate with this emotional state, like an Elvis Presley song or a hand gesture, such as a thumbs-up. This will serve as your anchor, and, once in in place, NLP states that you can use it to raise your spirits at any time simply by revisiting that sound or movement. Just put on that Elvis tune, or give yourself a thumbs-up, and bring yourself back to the positive experience!
