Dear Graduate,

You are Spirit embodied.

In the words of Teilhard de Chardin, “We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” The essential nature of our Spiritual Self is love. In the final words of many Process visualizations, you are reminded: “You are of the light, all parts of you are in the light, therefore, you are love, you are loving, and you are loveable.”

Love is perhaps too vast to be boundaried by definition, but as we begin to explore the nature of love, one of the definitions we can use is: “Love is the flowing, the outpouring of emotional goodness to yourself first – and then to others in your life.” When we have love for self, love to others pours out from an abundance within. We do not need to court the love of others to fill our empty tank – “giving to get.” Love flows without effort.

For a day or a morning or an hour, live in the question, “What is the experience of living in self-love?” Let your curiosity bring your mindful awareness into focus around this question as you move through your day. In this way, your question becomes a quest. The answer to your question is not a definition, but rather an embodied experience of self-love deepening within you. And, by the way, each time you recycle, you are embodying what it is to live as a spiritual self – to live as a being of love. More on that next week!

Today’s action step: Write down a list of at least five things that you would want in a loving relationship. For example: kindness, playfulness, gentleness, passion, adventure, humor, respect, etc.  Now look at the list and ask yourself, “Do I have these qualities in my relationship with myself?” Cultivate self-love!
